A small 18th C. hanging corner cupboard painted in Ameland with the story of Tomyris and the head of Cyrus.

A painted corner cupboard. High 83 cm. Wide 50 cm. Deep 20 cm. The flat door with a very well painted scene of a story told by the Greek historian Herodotus. Tomyris, queen of the Massagetes, a nomad society living on the eastern border of Persia, defeated the famous emperor Cyrus in 530 B.C. in a battle and killed him. Cyrus was known as a very successfull, but also very cruel man. After the battle she had his head severed and immersed in a bowl with blood. The cupboard is in mint condition and was painted on the island of Ameland around 1750.
