A very rare rush container of leather and dated 1878.

A rush sheath. Overall length 21,5 cm. The sheath is entirely made of leather in two colours. In the upper end five brass lined holes for inserting rush. The upper black leather part shows the owners initials "T.W", and the date "1878". Rush was used for lighting. The leatherwork of this item is very refined and in mint condition. Zeeland, 19th C.
