A 19th C carved and painted lion from a Frisian ships rudder.
A nicely carved and painted lion. Overall length 22 cm, height 12 cm. This type of lion was traditionally made for decoration of the rudder of Frisian sailing ships. On the underside two holes for fixation to the rudder with wooden pegs. Also an old label stating that this lion is from the ship "De 2 Gebroeders" (The 2 Brothers) in Makkum (Friesland). Mid 19th C.
