A "Bavelaar". High 8,5 cm. Wide 12 cm. Deep 3 cm. Bavelaars are three dimensional diorama's made of bone or wood. The name Bavelaar is from a family in Leiden, the founding father was Cornelis who started making these small diorama's in the middle of the 18th Century. This one, in wood, was made by his son, Cornelis the younger (1747-1820). It shows a classical scene with the remnants of a temple and to the right a small memorial pyramid. Made around 1790. In mint condition. With an old collectors label on the back.
